Keeping your stomach healthy during Ramadan

Fasting during Ramadan is a spiritual practice and is known to improve health. Those with health conditions may encounter challenges during the fasting period and must take specific precautions to make the most of the precious month. It would be best to take extra care of your health during this Holy Month.

During the month of Ramadan, people often experience digestive issues due to changes in the timing, types and quantities of food eaten. Health issues during this time may be caused by overindulging in food, eating unhealthy foods such as oily, fried or spicy food, sleeping immediately after a meal (especially after suhoor), eating in a hurry, drinking a lot of caffeine or carbonated drinks, and not drinking enough liquids.

Iftar should always start with easily digested foods like dates. Do not overeat when breaking the fast, giving the stomach a 10-minute break before beginning to eat the main meal. Avoid deep-fried, oily, and fatty foods since they can trigger acid reflux and cause dyspeptic symptoms such as bloating and burping.

Staying hydrated during the non-fasting hours is essential to avoid dehydration. The ideal time to drink water is 30 to 45 minutes after the meal. Avoid drinking caffeine because it may increase urination and cause dehydration. Consuming caffeine after prolonged hours of fasting is linked to heartburn, so it’s best avoided.

Sleeping right after suhoor is a common habit among people who fast. It’s always advised to not go to bed immediately after a meal because the food needs enough time to get digested. Smoking right after breaking the fast is another commonly seen habit. Smokers increase their risk of acid reflux and dyspepsia by smoking during fasting hours.

Constipation is a digestive problem that many people experience during Ramadan. This happens because you eat more meat and chicken than usual, which lacks fiber. To avoid constipation, eat more vegetables and fruits!

Physical activities like walking or jogging keep the mind and body healthy and are helpful to keep the metabolism running smoothly.
